Ian Hughes & the Half Giraffe Quintet Live at Butter Notes Café

Join us at Butter Notes Café for an evening of live jazz with guitarist Ian Hughes and the Half Giraffe Quintet.

A Seattle native, Ian Hughes began playing guitar as a teenager inspired by the city’s grunge scene. Although he was introduced to jazz through his school jazz band, his interests initially centered on classic rock and progressive music. A growing appreciation for the harmonic writing of artists like Jeff Buckley and Pink Floyd eventually led him back to jazz, where he went on to study the genre in college.

The Half Giraffe Quintet brings together modern jazz, original compositions, and improvisation in an intimate listening-room setting.

Brushes & Bass is a “chamber jazz” ensemble led by drummer Greg Williamson and bassist Heather Chriscaden. The group explores the lighter side of jazz texture, featuring new arrangements of music with lots of solid bass walking and brushes tipping. Joining them on this performance will be special guest New York saxophonist Jon DeLucia (www.jondelucia.com) along with frequent Brushes & Bass collaborator Brent Jensen (saxophone). Both Williamson and Chriscaden tend to live in the groove of swing, and in this case have adeptly summoned two saxophonists that thrive in that environment of sound, expanding their concept to “Brushes & Bass & Reeds”. Expect expert playing that is spontaneous and melodically creative, presented in an energetic manner.
